Why open a can for sloppy joes? Instead open your refrigerator with this recipe for Southern Barbeque Sloppy Joes which is still quick and easy but much healthier.
To make it even lighter you can use ground turkey or chicken. You can even make it with tofu and it would be just as tasty.
The southern barbeque sauce has a nice tangy but sweet barbecue flavor, and a much fresher taste with fresh ingredients. This dish will take you less than 30 minutes to make and is perfect for weeknights.
- 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
- 2 onions, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1/2 tablespoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 pound ground beef, turkey or chicken
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 buns, toasted
In a large skillet, heat the sunflower oil and add the onions, peppers and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the cumin and chili powder then stir in your ground meat. Break apart the meat and cook for about 3 minutes. Next add the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and salt. Cook until sauce is slightly thickened about 5 minutes.
For Worcestershire sauce I use Wan Ja Shan brand, it’s organic and vegan. The only thing that would make it better is if it was non-GMO. If you’re looking for a really good organic ketchup, check out the Woodstock brand.
Toast the inside of each bun and what them clean their plates.
Hope you enjoy!
